The North Coast 500, Scotland
This five-hundred-mile (or thereabouts) road trip will take you around the north coast of Scotland. It’s a great way to get acquainted with all of the natural beauty that the country has to offer, including surf-battered cliffs, picturesque little pebble beaches, and soaring highlands. There are also dozens of amazing castles and villages to discover. Travel during winter, and you might find that the road ahead of you is clear, too.
The Cambrian Way, Wales
This Welsh route is substantially shorter, but it packs plenty of incredible mountain scenery into its 185 miles. You’ll be travelling between the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, meaning that this is a perfect route for hikers looking to conquer a variety of peaks over the duration of the trip. Along the way, you’ll see rolling hills, lakes, and little market towns where you can stop for a bite to eat. When the scenery is blanketed in snow, it’s even more impressive!
The Atlantic Highway, South West England
If you’re in the South West, then you’ll want to check out the A39 between Devon and Cornwall. Here, you’ll find incredible views of the Atlantic ocean, as well as a treasure trove of amazing beaches and cliffside walks. During winter, this part of the country is especially evocative on a clear day. You’ll be able to park alongside the sea, and peer out of the window on a clear, frosty morning. Perfect for those working on a novel – or who’d simply like to wake up to something beautiful every day.
The Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland
This route links two major settlements in Northern Ireland – Belfast and Londonderry. But the truly defining feature here is the famous Giant’s Causeway, which is Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. These famous basalt columns have been drawing travellers for centuries – but you’ll need the right footwear if you’re going to explore them during winter.
Also along the route is the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which offers an entirely different kind of experience!
