Not all holidays have to involve little more than lounging by the beach. If you’re more of an adventurer who enjoys the outdoors and getting your heart racing when you’re travelling abroad, here are a few activity holidays you might want to consider for 2023.
Cycling
There’s something effortlessly romantic about a cycling holiday, whether it’s with friends, a loved one or the whole family. It’s the perfect middle ground between walking and driving as you feel like you’re actually getting somewhere but also have time to truly immerse yourself in your surroundings. Cycling holidays in France are particularly popular with young families thanks to the variety of landscapes and the cycling culture.
More than anything, however, cycling is a sociable activity that allows you to spend time with the people you care about while also building your stamina and giving your party the opportunity to stop off wherever you wish and tailor your holiday to your wants and needs.
Skiing
If you’re an adrenaline junkie, skiing or snowboarding is definitely the holiday for you. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, there are hundreds of ski slopes to choose from and not all of them are as elitist as you might think. It’s also not just a potential holiday but a lifelong hobby you’re looking at and one that will continue to offer new challenges and experiences for as long as you live.
Skiing holidays are not just about skiing either. Most of the best ski resorts will include everything from top-quality restaurants to nightclubs and theatres to keep you entertained in the evening. Or maybe you can just curl up by the fireplace with a hot chocolate and watch the rest of the family enjoy themselves on the slopes? Either way, it’s a holiday it would be almost impossible to not love.
Canoeing
While a skiing holiday is something you’ll probably need to travel to experience, canoeing holidays are great fun and can be done anywhere from the UK to the rapids in Canada. In England alone, there are dozens of idyllic rivers stretching from Suffolk to London and beyond. For our money, however, perhaps the best canoeing holiday in the UK involves paddling down the River Avon and taking in the best of what Shakespeare country has to offer.
Further afield, meanwhile, you could quite comfortably lose yourself kayaking through the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, the fjords of Norway or the extraordinary scenery of Vietnam. It’s a hobby that can be enjoyed wherever there’s a reasonably still stretch of water and offers not only a good workout but allows you and your loved ones to experience nature in all its quiet glory.
