The Long-Term Impact Of A DUI

Most people are well aware that they shouldn’t get behind the wheel of a car when they’ve had something to drink. Impairing your motor skills, reaction times, and making you more likely to act emotionally, alcohol has no place on safe roads, and can cause awful accidents when it is abused. Of course, though, it isn’t always easy to tell when you’re over the legal limit, with staggering numbers of people being caught out with DUIs every year. While you might struggle, it’s always worth keeping on top of this, and the long-term impact of this sort of offence should be enough to keep you from doing it.

Getting A Job

Not a lot of people view drunk driving as a serious crime, though the damage that it can cause certainly makes it one. A lot of innocent people have died because of this offence, and a fortune has been caused in property damage. For this reason, a DUI is serious enough to be kept on your criminal record, and this can create some complications when you’re trying to get your next job. Most employers will want to know if you’ve been charged for crimes in the past, and will put a huge amount of effort into performing background checks. You have to be honest about this, with this route being just about the only way that you can make them ignore your crimes.

Driving Your Car

Even when you haven’t been banned from driving, having a DUI on your record can have a significant impact on your chances of getting back on the road. Insurance companies won’t want to take on the risk which you present, and most will simply refuse to cover you, making it impossible to drive again without risking further arrests. Drink driver insurance has been on the market for a very long time, with a lot of people using this product to get around the crimes they’ve committed. This will cost more than regular insurance, but will give you the chance to use the car you rely on every day.

Future Crimes

Once you’ve committed one road crime, it will be hard for you to get away with anything else. Police won’t be lenient with repeat offenders, and it’s very unlikely that you’ll get off with warnings for things like speeding when you’re in this position. Obviously, you shouldn’t be driving too fast or breaking other laws, but these are very small compared to drink driving, and it’s a shame when people get into more trouble than they have to with them. The only way to avoid this sort of stress is by keeping your record clean.

Driving is essential to a lot of people, and it will be impossible to live your life without this crucial tool. Of course, though, loads of people get caught drunk driving, and it’s easy to see how this can happen. This doesn’t give you any excuses, but means that you should always be aware of the problems which you could cause for yourself if you ignore the law.
