Slot updates to expect in 2020

Slot Machine

In order to predict what we can expect from slots in 2020, you need to know where they come from and where they find themselves now – follow this link.

In the beginning

The first slot machine with automatic payout was created in 1981. In 1907 the first fruit machine featuring BAR symbol as we know it was created.

For the next few years, slot machines stayed purely mechanical. This means that in order to play you needed to pull down the lever, which in turn spun the reels. By pulling on this lever players could also stop the spinning reels. This gave players a sense of control, and this is probably why the game became so popular. It is this lever that led to the coinage of the expression “one armed bandit”.

The electromechanical slot created in 1964 was operated entirely by electricity, but the reels were still set in motion by pulling down the lever.

The first video slot was created in 1976. Featuring a 19 inch Sony TV as display screens.

The next big shift came in 1996 with the release of the first video slot to feature a bonus game on a second screen. This second screen was very different from the first screen and additional wins could be made in this bonus game. It was during this time that slots really became popular in casinos.

The age of online slots

The advent of the internet brought with it online casinos. Initially only classics like Roulette and Blackjack were offered. But later slots were added too. Slots soon became more popular than other casino games, as can be seen from the huge selection players have to choose from.

The first online slots tended to simply imitate slot machines in land-based casinos. It had the same number of reels and same symbols. However, pretty soon new themes and designs started emerging. All of a sudden there were nine reels, an endless amount of symbols and unusual layouts (swirls instead of reels).

Slots in 2019

The slot machines released in 2019 is nothing short of impressive. They offer better graphics, bigger payouts and even more new features. Currently, slot machines range from 3-reel to 9-reel, 1 pay line to 100, and a multitude of layouts and themes to choose from.

What to expect in 2020

Each year brings with it new technological advancements. Look at how far we have come. From one-armed bandits to thousands of online slot machines, I think the future holds more features and bonuses, better graphics. Some slot machine developers might even start experimenting more with Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

The strife competition in the online gaming industry means that developers constantly have to step up their game. Who knows what they have up their sleeves. Keep an eye out for big things.
