Phenomenal Ways in Which Technology Has Affected Our Social Lives

Social Media

These days technology has become such an important part of society. In fact, it’s hard to conceive of an area of society that doesn’t use technology. Business has embraced it utterly, and we use it every day in our personal lives. But technology has caused an awful lot of societal changes. As a society, and a planet, we have been altered irrevocably by the evolution of technology and the power of the internet.

You need to give some thought to the ways in which your life has been affected by technology. There’s no doubting the fact that you will have experienced change. And it will have come about through technological developments. And one of the key areas that most of us have experienced changes is in our social lives. So, let’s have a look at the different way in which technology has had an effect on our social lives.

Interaction

Perhaps the most noticeable change has been in the way we interact with other people. Technology is so faceless now, and most of our interaction’s done via phone or over the internet. Social media sites allow us to follow the lives of people we know without ever having to speak to them. But the internet has also made it easier to keep in contact with people who don’t live near us. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s instant. Nowadays, instead of writing a letter we go on to Gmail, and we send an email. Instead of writing cards we visit eco2greetings.com and send ecards to all our work colleagues. This all happens at the click of a button or the tap of a key.

Documentation

Another way in which technology has transformed our social lives is by feeding our need to record and document. We’re obsessed with documenting all aspects of our lives. Social media has been geared increasingly towards this. First through profiles like on MySpace and Facebook, and then pictures with the likes of Instagram. In the last few years, there has also been a surge in the number of bloggers online. You might like the idea of launching a blog as an online journal, either for yourself or for the world. And that’s the beauty of blogging and technology, you have that choice.

Collaboration

A big aspect of social interaction is collaboration. It’s people getting together and working on things, either for business or pleasure. Nowadays, meetings are getting replaced with conference calls. Rather than going out to play a sport we sit in front of the Xbox and play Fifa with our friends online. The whole collaboration process has become a much more virtual, digital thing. This has made it more accessible to more people. But in many ways it’s also reduced the purpose and benefit of the exercise.

As you can see, technology has significantly altered the way that we interact and socialise with people. It’s made it much easier for us to have social dealings with people in different countries. But it’s also turned social interaction into a faceless, digital concept. Whether or not this is a positive thing remains to be seen. But it shows no signs of slowing down.
