Changing your driving habits can lower your motoring costs

In a time when drivers are faced with rising fuel prices, leading van lease firm Northgate has advised motorists on how they can keep the cost of motoring down by changing their behaviour behind the wheel.

Recent research by RAC Fuel Watch — which can be viewed in full here — revealed that there has been a 0.54p increase in the average price of unleaded petrol across the UK between June 24th, when Britain voted to leave the European Union, and July 12th. During the same period, a 0.73p rise in the average price of diesel has also been recorded.

If a forecast made by Petrol Retailers Association Chairman Brian Madderson is anything to go on, these increases shouldn’t be a major surprise. In June, Mr Madderson predicted that the pound’s plunge against the dollar would have an immediate impact on wholesale fuel prices. This is because the price is quoted in dollars.

At the same time, the AA had stated: “Assuming that current market conditions persist … the price of petrol at some fuel stations might be expected to rise by 2.25p a litre, or £1.25 a tank.”

To counter the rising price of fuel, Northgate has recommended that drivers adjust their driving habits as follows in order to reduce their motoring costs:

  • Avoid being too harsh when braking, as this causes brake pads to wear down more quickly.
  • Don’t let the rev count rise too high before changing gears, as this puts unnecessary strain on a vehicle’s engine.
  • Take a smooth approach to corners, so to apply less stress on a vehicle’s suspension system and its steering components.
  • Relax when accelerating, as this will reduce the pressure applied to a vehicle’s clutch.
