Can Smartphone Games Rival The Nintendo Switch?

At one point Samsung and Apple were killing in sales and thus people in the technology and mainly smartphone industry may have thought, they would kill the market for everyone else. How wrong they were. The choice of smartphone in today’s modern world is absolutely astonishing. There’s literally something for everybody and that kind of varied market is great for innovators. It’s also great for gamers, as Samsung and Apple may still be at the top of the tree, duking it out, but other companies can make niche products which sell enough to meet profit targets. The ASUS ROG is one shining example of this new sub-market as people who want to game seriously while on the move but still have a modern smartphone get the best of both worlds. With an Octa-core and 8GB of RAM, the phone also can play games at 90 frames-per-second. The Razor Phone is another smartphone made specifically for gaming. The only other real handheld console out there is the Nintendo Switch which many people have come to love and own; 18 million to be exact. So which cancels out which?

Switch flagships

Its Nintendo so of course they will always bring out their big guns when it comes to flagship titles. The Legend of Zelda: Breadth of the Wild is one of the best selling games on the Switch. It currently retails in Target at $54:99. It’s clearly a classic that has gone through a modern transformation. You guessed it, Mario also makes an appearance in Mario Kart Deluxe 8. Still one of the best multiplayer racing games with new textures, weapons, tracks, and sounds. You can always slide on the two joysticks the Switch has for much better control for games like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. It’s easily one of the best alternate history games out there, and with the Switch you can immerse yourself in this terrifying but fascinating world, anytime you wish.

Coming of age

Smartphones aren’t going to take this lying down. Tekken is one of the best fighting games if not the best at the moment, that you can experience. Its mobile version is available on the Razor Phone which also has a 120Hz display. Modern Combat 5 and Hitman Sniper provide shooting game enthusiasts with something to occupy their time while waiting for the train. Final Fantasy 15 available on your phone too, known as the ‘pocket edition’. As with every FF game, the story is the main attraction and XV doesn’t disappoint. A tale of a world that’s knee-deep in absolute chaos. Kingdoms are at each other’s throat and all you need to do is strategize the fall of your enemies. The vibrant colors and cinema-quality sound of huge infantry units going up against massive monsters in real-time is awe-inspiring.

So do smartphones have the Switch beat? No, but the gap is getting closer and closer with each year that goes by. The Switch is still the choice of the truly serious gamer that wants to game on the move. One thing the smartphone has managed to nail down is the high frame rate. But with regards to pure prestigious flagship titles, there’s more work to be done.
