The 5 Longest Bridges in The World

Donghai Bridge Joints

There have been many amazing feats of engineering since even the cavemen, but some are more staggering than others. Alongside mountain-hugging highways and man-made islands, some of the longest bridges in the world have to be seen to be believed.

Unsurprisingly for a country so vast that is currently enjoying a great economic boom, China leads the way with pioneering bridges for both road and rail, whilst the United States have also built some incredible transport bridges too.

And it’s no surprise that these projects ran up bills into the billions of dollars, with thousands of tons of concrete, hundreds of workmen working around the clock and even the number of bridge joints and other hardware that were required!

So without further ado, here are the 5 longest bridges in the world.

1. Denyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge

The Denyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China is officially the world’s longest bridge. The viaduct, which forms part of the gigantic Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway, is a staggering 102 miles long and passes through areas like Danyang and Changzhou.

This bridge is one of the reasons the Chinese railway is one of the most expensive transport projects in history, with this comparatively small section of the route taking four years, 10,000 people and $8.5 billion of investment to complete.

2. Tianjin Grand Bridge

Again forming part of the Beijing-Shanghai rail network, the Tianjin Grand Bridge between Langfang and Qingxian is 70 miles long and was completed around the same time as the Denyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge.

This bridge was officially recognised as the second longest in the world by the Guinness World Records book three years ago.

3. Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge

Another stunning construction project from China, the 50 mile expanse of bridge forms part of the Zhengzhou to Xi’an High Speed Railway.

Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge is so vast it crosses the Wei River twice and once held the title of the longest bridge on the planet until its two countrymen were built a year later in 2011.

4. The Bang Na Expressway

The longest bridge outside of China, the Bang Na Expressway is a 6-lane highway in Thailand, elevated above the National Highway. It is also the longest toll road in the world.

A over 34 miles long, this expressway is one of a kind, needing nearly 2 million cubic metres of concrete to build and at points is 12 lanes wide.

5. Beijing Grand Bridge

Somewhat predictably we return to China for the last lengthy bridge on this list, and again it forms an integral part of the Beijing-Shanghai rail network.

The Beijing Grand Bridge is just under 30 miles long and was officially opened in 2011.
