How to Make Sure You’re Not Getting Ripped Off by a Dealer

Car Dealerships

Some, but not all, car dealers are out to rip you off. Here’s how to make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

Have a Mechanic Check the Car

If you’re not an expert on cars, there are a lot of things that might be wrong with the car that you wouldn’t be able to notice as an amateur. That’s why it’s vital to have an expert look over the car thoroughly. The mechanic will be looking out for the specific problems that are commonly found in used cars.

One of the major concerns you should have when you’re looking to buy a used car is cut and shut cars. These are cars that are two halves of two different cars that have been welded together. This is incredibly dangerous, so you want to make sure your car isn’t one of these, but some dodgy dealers hide it well, so let the mechanic check it.

Focus on the Tyres

Tyres are one of the areas that you should be focusing on when you buy a used car. They get worn down over time, so you need to make sure that they’re in good condition before you hand over any money. Low tyre pressure could be a sign that there’s a puncture in the tyre, and you don’t want to have to be replacing them in a few years.

If you do find a car that you want to buy, but it has poor tyres, you might be able to cut a deal with the salesperson. Ideally, they’d offer to replace the tyres for you, but they might pay a percentage at the very least. If they try to lie to you and tell you there’s nothing wrong with the tyres when there clearly is, it might be best to walk away.

Find a Good Dealer

If you can find a good dealer, you know that you’re in safe hands. This is not an easy thing to do though; there are so many car dealerships out there and it’s hard to find out which are good and which are bad. You should use dealerships that are regulated by industry bodies and have good ratings.

You could also think about talking to people you know and ask them who they bought their used cars from. Getting a recommendation from  someone you trust is pretty easy, so start asking around. There are reputable dealerships like Motorline Direct that are known to be reliable, so check them out too.

Take it for a Test Drive

A lot of people don’t bother taking the car for a drive before they buy it, but what the hurry? You can’t get a proper feel for the car if you don’t get behind the wheel of it and hit the road. You might even pick up a fault with the car when you drive it. There might be a noise in the back that you only hear when the engine is running, for example.

It’s not just about picking up faults though. You need to also see if you enjoy the way in which it drives. Every car is different. They all have their own little quirks and differences. Some of them might annoy you and others you might love, so take it for a test drive.
